Local Vision is a program of the Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way in Sunbury, PA that works to alleviate poverty among those citizens classified as “ALICE”.  ALICE, a United Way acronym which stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, represents the growing number of individuals and families who are working, but are unable to afford the basic necessities of housing, food, child care, health care, and transportation (United Way).  People in this category typically make too much money to qualify for many benefits but too little money to make ends meet.


Services Provided by Local Vision


Casework services provide referrals, advocacy, budget counseling and support


Financial Assistance is provided on a limited basis to pay a bill that is due before receiving a first paycheck, pay an emergency bill that threatens to financially de-stabilize the family, or pay for materials required by a new employer such as goggles or steel-toed boots.
 

Furniture to aid someone moving into a home after surviving domestic abuse, a fire, or other natural disaster.  Where possible, Local Vision provides gently used furniture.    Twin beds are purchased for children
 

Community Services Local Vision works to expand available services that end poverty.  Local Vision has been instrumental in expanding the availability of free diapers for those who can’t afford them.
